Joanna Ewa Nowokunski is the lead attorney and founder of Nowokunski Law Firm PLLC. Her practice focuses on Criminal Defense, Family Law and Divorce, and Immigration. As an experienced litigation attorney of 13 years, she has successfully tried highly contested matrimonial cases in Supreme Court of New York which included custody, child support, spousal maintenance and/or equitable distribution. In addition, Counselor Nowokunski successfully tired Custody, Child Support, Family Offense, Neglect and Enforcement of Foreign Judgment Cases in Family Courts. She has tried numerous criminal cases counting Felonies and Misdemeanors in front of a jury and judges, and developed significant expertise handling the defense of Domestic Violence, Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol and Assault jury trials. Background and Experience
Prior to forming her own Law Firm in 2014, Counsellor Nowokunski was a junior partner at the prestigious law firm, Ross & Asmar LLC. where she was recruited by one of the Partners while working as a Criminal Defense Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of New York City. As a Junior Partner at Ross & Asmar, LLC, Ms. Nowokunski handled matrimonial and immigration cases. As a defense attorney at the Legal Aid Society, she defended indigenous clients and handled criminal cases from arraignments to suppression hearings and trials.
She has given numerous lectures and symposiums, and was the keynote speaker on Divorce Law at the Polish Consulate in New York City. Counsellor Nowokunski contributes weekly articles about Matrimonial, Family and Criminal Law for Magazyn PLUS and provides legal information for articles published in the Polish language newspaper, Nowy Dziennik, NY.
Ms. Joanna E. Nowokunski was born in the Warmia region of Poland and came to the United States as a child where she completed all her studies. She received her Juris Doctorate from the New York Law School and has been awarded a BA Degree in International Relations from Wheaton College. She has also enriched her field of studies abroad at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Madrid, Spain, where she studied Social Sciences and Economics.
She is fluent in English, Polish and Spanish.
