About Attorney Nowokunski

Joanna Ewa Nowokunski is the Principal Attorney at Nowokunski Law Firm, PLLC. Her litigation practice focuses on criminal defense (felonies and misdemeanors), immigration and deportation proceedings, as well as complex matrimonial and family law matters. Joanna has experience in litigating both criminal jury trials and matrimonial trials. She also handles family offense and custody trials and hearings in Family Court.

Joanna has extensive experience representing clients in complex criminal cases. Prior to establishing her own law firm, Joanna worked as a criminal defense attorney for the Legal Aid Society of New York, where she handled all cases from arraignments to suppression hearings and trials. She has conducted numerous misdemeanor and felony jury trials and has developed a significant expertise in defending DUI/DWI cases.

Joanna has represented numerous clients in deportation proceedings and other immigration matters. The outcome of criminal cases, even from the far past, may have negative consequences on immigration status. Joanna’s powerful presentation, professional approach and compassion in representing her clients in both these crucial fields have gained her a substantially noteworthy success rate.

In addition to criminal and immigration law, Joanna handles matrimonial and family court cases, representing many clients dealing with complex divorce cases involving custody, child support, spousal maintenance and equitable distribution. Joanna is also a strong believer in resolving matrimonial matters in a "civil" way that lead to settlements between the spouses. However, she does not shy away from litigation when necessary. Matrimonial cases are emotionally and financially difficult for spouses. Joanna is deeply aware that, during these cases, her clients need more than just zealous representation. She and her staff are always available to meet with the clients and to provide them with prompt answers to their questions or concerns.

Joanna has participated in numerous lectures and symposiums, and was the keynote speaker on divorce law at the Polish Consulate in New York City.

Born in the Mazury region of Poland, Joanna came to the United States as a child. This background provides her with a unique insight into her clients’ immigration matters since she is herself an immigrant. Joanna describes herself as a person who has combined the best of her native country and the United States.

Joanna received her J.D. Degree from the New York Law School and has a BA Degree in international relations from Wheaton College. She has also enriched her field of studies abroad at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain, where she studied social sciences and economics.

Joanna is fluent in English, Spanish, and Polish.

Joanna's office is located in the midst of the vibrant neighborhoods of Greenpoint and Williamsburg.
